Wandertag #6
For Wandertag, Martin Chramosta went in search of obliterated and abandoned Art in Public Space (Kunst am Bau) projects. In the Federal Office Building Erdberg in Vienna's third district he found a special place with objects that seem to be unsure of their purpose. In the large-scale courtyard, the objects left behind intertwine with ashtrays and trash cans, waiting people, students, or passers-by. It is a place of transition, an in-between space that seems to mean nothing to anyone.
Drawing from research into functional outdoor furniture, such as gumball dispensers and ashtrays, Chramosta designs under the title Gehäuse sculptures, whose forms seem familiar but whose use and materiality are distinct from their source. Incorporated materials from the neighborhood interweave with aesthetic references to the building structures. Chramosta's works create tensions between past and present, sketch and monument, sacred and popular.
Wandertag is a project series highlighting solo presentations in public space. Whether an industrial area, the shop window of a car dealer, a house facade, or a public observatory, each location offers a new approach to the artistic practice of the invited artists as well as unusual views of Vienna. Each Wandertag is accompanied by its own walking route that visitors can follow either on guided tours or on their own.
