Wandertag #4
For Wandertag, curated by Nora Mayr, Marianne Vlaschits presents a new series of works in the east and west domes of the Vienna University Observatory. The starting point for her multi-layered paintings are scientific illustrations from the outstanding collection of the institute's library. Vlaschits’ artistic examination of astronomy is combined in a wonderful way with an exploration of the observatory as a scientific place and across two guided tours that include observations of the sky.
For years, the universe has emerged as a source of inspiration in the artist's often surreal works. For Wandertag, her canvases echo the shape of the observatory domes’ window frames, adding new views to the architecture. The Vienna University Observatory was ceremoniously opened in 1883 as the largest structurally-enclosed observatoray building in the world at the time. It also houses Austria's largest astronomical research and teaching facility, the Institute of Astrophysics.
Wandertag is a project series highlighting solo presentations in public space. Whether an industrial area, the shop window of a car dealer, a house facade or a public observatory - each location offers a new approach to the artistic practice of the invited artists as well as unusual views of Vienna. Each Wandertag is accompanied by its own walking route that visitors can follow either on guided tours or on their own.
